Westfield State Shoots Past Fitchburg State, 3-0

Kirouac registers 19 saves for the Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 22, 2012) – Westfield State defeated Fitchburg State, 3-0 in MASCAC women's soccer action at Elliot Field this evening.

Three different players netted goals for the Owls who improve to 8-0-1 (2-0-0 MASCAC) on the season, while Fitchburg State falls to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

In the opening frame, Westfield State took the lead in the 37th minute of play as sophomore Colie Sambrook (Naugatuck, Conn./Naugatuck) received a feed from senior Kayley Miller (Ludlow, Mass./Ludlow) and fired a low shot into the far side of the net for the 1-0 advantage heading into the break.

Following intermission, The Owls doubled their lead (2-0) at the 52:35 mark when sophomore Sarah Sypek (Westhamton, Mass./Hampshire Regional) connected on her first marker of the season off an assist from freshman Katy Knight (Suffield, Conn./.Suffield). Westfield State added an insurance goal in the 62nd minute of action as senior Brittanie McGregor (Ludlow, Mass./Ludlow) slipped the ball inside the near post resulting in the 3-0 final.

Throughout the match, Westfield State dominated the offensive front, out shooting Fitchburg State 40-0, while holding a 15-0 margin in corners. Between the pipes, junior Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) finished with 19 saves in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while junior Jess Habif (Natick, Mass./Holliston) was untested in 68 minutes of action for the Owls.

Fitchburg State (1-7-0, 0-2-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Tuesday as it visits Curry College at 5:30 p.m. Westfield State (8-0-1, 2-0-0 MASCAC) will host Smith College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
