Fitchburg State Falls At Worcester State, 6-2

Santos registers two goals in Falcons MASCAC setback

WORCESTER, Mass. (October 20, 2012) – Sophomore Sierra Santos (Lakeville, Mass./Dartmouth) scored a pair goals, but the Fitchburg State women's soccer team fell to Worcester State University, 6-2 in MASCAC action this morning at Coughlin Field.

Fitchburg State opened the contests strong, posting a 1-0 lead just 4:13 into the match. Santos got the Falcons on the board as she headed home a corner kick off the foot of classmate Mikaela Foley (Jefferson, Mass./Wachusett Regional), but Worcester State bounced right back, posting a pair of goals over the 11th and 12th minutes for a 2-1 advantage.

Sophomore Alyssa Sawyer (W. Springfield, Mass./W. Springfield) got the Lancers on the scoreboard with her second tally of year, while senior Brianne Beckman (Lakeville, Mass./Apponoquet) tucked the ball inside the far post for the 2-1 advantage. Beckman capped a Worcester State three goal scoring surge with her team-leading 12th marker of the season heading into the break.

In the second half, Fitchburg State cut its deficit in half (3-2) at the 51:45 mark as Santos notched her second goal of the contest. The sophomore midfielder took a long pass from junior Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass./Foxboro) and chipped the ball over Lancer goalkeeper Mia Koutoulas (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) from five yards out.

Worcester State quickly ended the Falcons comeback hopes however, regaining its two-goal lead in the 83rd minute of play, when Beckman tallied her second marker of the game. Sophomore Therese Morss (Marion, Mass./Old Rochester) then sealed the victory down the stretch for the Lancers, connecting for back-to-back scores at the game's 6-2 final.

Throughout the contest, Worcester State out shot Fitchburg State 22-5, while the Falcons held a slim 3-2 margin in corners. Between the pipes, sophomore Kelsey Ford (Franconia, N.H./Profile School) made three saves in 61 minutes of action for Fitchburg State, while Koutoulas finished two stops in the complete game effort for the Lancers.

Fitchburg State (3-12-0, 1-5-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Tuesday as it visits Smith College for a contest starting at 3:30 p.m. Worcester State (7-6-2, 4-1-1 MASCAC) will host UMass Dartmouth on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
