Eastern Connecticut Blanks Fitchburg State, 4-0

Kirouac stops six shots in Falcons non-conference setback

MANSFIELD, Conn. (August 31, 2013) – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to Eastern Connecticut State University in second round action of the ECSU Warriors Classic.

Fitchburg State threatened early in the contest as junior Kelsey Murphy (Maynard, Mass./Assabet Valley Regional) broke through the defense and fired a shot that hit the far post just 4:06 into the opening stanza. The Warriors were able to take the lead in the 16th minute of play as junior Taylor Shannon (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) headed home a feed from sophomore Brianna Curcio (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) into the upper right corner of the net for the 1-0 margin.

Eastern Connecticut doubled their lead (2-0) at the 36:52 mark as senior Megan Godwin (Manchester, Conn./Manchester) connected for her first marker of the season as the senior forward collected a loose ball in front of the net and slipped a shot inside the left post.

In the second half, the Warriors secured the victory in the 61st minute of action as junior Whitney Mantel (Stamford, Conn./Westhill) struck for her first goal of season on an assist from freshman Janessa Soucy (Milford, Conn./Jonathan Law) to make the score 3-0, before Mantel capped the scoring less than two minutes later on her second marker of the game resulting in the 4-0 final.

Throughout the contest, Eastern Connecticut controlled the offensive end, outshooting the Falcons by a 16-4 margin, while also holding a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

Between the pipes, senior Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) registered six saves for Fitchburg State in the complete game effort, while freshman Chelsea Santos (Windsor Locks, Conn./Windsor Locks) made one stop for Eastern Connecticut to pick up her first collegiate victory.

Fitchburg State (0-2, 0-0 MASCAC) returns to action Thursday as it visits Emmanuel College at 7:00 p.m. Eastern Connecticut (2-0, 0-0 LEC) will take on Farmingdale State College on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in opening round action of the 2013 Valiant Classic hosted by Manhattanville College.
