Kirouac notches five saves in Falcons non-conference setback

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (October 16, 2013) – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team fell to Rhode Island College, 1-0 in non-conference action this evening at the RIC Soccer Field.

In the opening frame, Fitchburg State nearly took the lead at the 9:49 mark as junior midfielder Sierra Santos (Lakeville, Mass.) settled a corner kick off the foot of freshman Samantha Zina (Abington, Mass.) and headed a shot that sailed just left of the net, while sophomore Jacqueline Walker (Derry, N.H.) added a late scoring chance for the Falcons that also went just right of the post to keep the match 0-0 going into the break.

Following intermission, Rhode Island College grabbed the lead in the 55th minute of action as sophomore Charissa Champagne (North Providence, R.I.) received a feed from newcomer Angela Ragosta (Greenville, R.I.) and fired a shot into the back of the net for her first tally of the season to make the score 1-0.

The Green and Gold turned up the pressure over the final 25 minutes of play as Zina and junior back Devin Donnelly (Charlton, Mass.) both had quality shots on target but Anchormen keeper Audrey Maia (Norton, Mass.) was able to turn aside both shots, resulting in the 1-0 final.

Throughout the game, Rhode Island College held a narrow 12-11 margin in shots, while also holding a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks. Between the pipes, senior Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) collected five stops in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State, Norton finished with five saves to earn the victory for the Anchormen.
