Westfield State Upends Fitchburg State, 3-0

Kirouac posts 13 saves for the Falcons

FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 21, 2013) – Westfield State defeated Fitchburg State, 3-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's soccer action at Elliot Field this afternoon.

In the first half, Fitchburg State nearly opened the scoring in the 20th minute of action as senior forward Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass.) was awarded a penalty kick after being taken down inside the box but Owl net-minder Jess Habif (Natick, Mass.) made a diving fingertip save to her right to keep the score at 0-0.

Shortly thereafter, Westfield State grabbed the lead at 23:21 mark as freshman Hannah Zannini (Amesbury, Mass.) collected a pass from senior Lauren Marshall (W. Springfield, Mass.) and lofted a shot into the back of the net for her second score of the season for the 1-0 advantage going into the break.

Following intermission, the Owls doubled their lead (2-0) in the 53rd minute of play when sophomore Ashley Bovat (Westfield, Mass.) turned a defender and fired a shot into the lower right corner for her second tally of the season.

Westfield State capped the scoring at the 85:19 mark as freshman Amanda Ray (Holliston, Mass.) collected a corner kick off the foot of junior Amanda Grant (Westfield, Mass.)  and buried a shot inside the far post for her first collegiate goal with Marshall adding a second assist on the marker, resulting in the 3-0 final.

Throughout the match, Westfield State controlled the offensive end, out shooting Fitchburg State 22-8, while the Falcons held a 5-3 advantage in corners. Between the pipes, senior Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass.) registered 13 saves in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State while Habif stopped four shot in 90 minutes of action for the Owls.

Fitchburg State (1-5-0, 0-1-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Tuesday as it hosts the Colonels of Curry College at 7 p.m. Westfield State (4-3-0, 1-0-0 MASCAC) will travel to Smith College on Wednesday for a contest starting at 4 p.m.
