Fitchburg State Falls At Worcester State, 3-0

Kirouac registers five saves for Falcons

WORCESTER, Mass. (November 2, 2013) – The Fitchburg State women's soccer dropped a 3-0 decision to Worcester State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon at Coughlin Field.

With the victory, Worcester State improves to 9-6-2 overall and 3-2-2 in the MASCAC and will host an opponent yet to be determined in opening round action of the 2013 MASCAC women's soccer tournament, while Fitchburg State concludes its season at 6-12-0 overall and 2-5-0 within the conference.

Despite being out-shot by a 9-3 margin in the first half, Fitchburg State was able to contain the Lancers offense and take 0-0 stalemate into intermission behind the solid play of sophomore Jacqueline Walker (Derry, N.H.) and juniors Devin Donnelly (Charlton, Mass.) and Sierra Santos (Lakeville, Mass.).

Following the scoreless first half, Worcester State broke the 0-0 draw in the 62nd minute of action as junior Shelby Archer (Dayville, Conn.) found classmate Cassie Giardina (Pittsfield, Mass.) in front of the net before Giardina lofted a shot into the upper right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Blue and Gold doubled their margin at the 72:59 mark when sophomore forward Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, Mass.) blasted a shot into the back of the net for her eight tally of the season off assists from Archer and junior Margo Clifford (Attleboro, Mass.) for the 2-0 lead.

The hosts upped their lead three and half minutes later as Clifford settled a corner kick off the foot of Macomber and headed the ball inside the far post for her second marker of the season to put the Lancer up 3-0.

The Falcons nearly broke its scoring silence in the 80th minute of play when Santos blasted a shot on target but Worcester State net-minder Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, Mass.) deflected away from goal to preserve the 3-0 victory.

Throughout the match, Worcester State out shot Fitchburg State 20-6, while limiting the Falcons to just one corner kick. In goal, senior Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass.) collected five stops in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while Witkowski finished with two saves en-route to her third shutout of the season for the Lancers.
