WPI Edges Fitchburg States, 3-2

Santos and Jamieson collect one goal apiece for Falcons

WORCESTER, Mass. (September 14, 2013) – Senior forward Megan Forti (Lynn, Mass.) registered four points on one goal and two assists as WPI edged Fitchburg State, 3-2 in non-conference women's soccer action at Alumni Field this afternoon.

Fitchburg State grabbed the lead in the 12th minute of action as junior forward Sierra Santos (Lakeville, Mass.) fired a shot inside the near post for her third score of the season off an assist from freshman Samantha Zina (Abington, Mass.) for the 1-0 margin.

The Engineers responded immediately, knotting the score (1-1) less than forty second later, as Forti settled a loose ball, spilt the defense and tucked the ball into the lower right corner of the net for her fourth tally on the year.

The Falcons regained the lead at the 19:25 mark when senior Rachel Jamieson (Foxboro, Mass.) lofted a shot from twenty yards out that was just over the outstretched hands of Engineer goalkeeper Maddie Willer (Penfield, N.Y.) to the upper right side of the net for the 2-1 advantage.

In the second half, WPI retied the score (2-2) in the 53rd minute as freshman Erin Bracken (Bridgewater, Mass.) one timed a shot inside the near post for her first collegiate tally, using an assist from Forti.

The hosts took their first lead of the contest at the 78:38 mark when senior Courtney Langley (Fairfield, Me.) took a feed from Forti and deposited the ball into the back of the net for the 3-2 margin. With just under twenty seconds remaining in the match, the Falcons nearly tied the game as senior forward Nicole Stone (Webster, Mass.) blasted a shot on goal but Willer made an outstanding diving save to her right to preserve the 3-2 victory.

Throughout the game, WPI outshot Fitchburg State, 14-7, while the Falcons held a narrow 2-1 margin in corner kicks. In net, senior Jillian Kirouac (Leominster, Mass.) posted five saves in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State, while Willer stopped four shots for the Engineers to earn the win.

Fitchburg State (1-4-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it opens conference play by hosting Westfield State at 2 p.m. WPI (6-0-0, 0-0-0 NEWMAC) will travel to Framingham State University on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
