Worcester State Defeats Fitchburg State, 4-0

Ford collects seven saves for Falcons in season finale

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Junior forward Alicia Macomber tallied a pair of markers as Worcester State defeated Fitchburg State, 4-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's soccer action this morning at Elliot Field.

With her four points on the afternoon, Macomber set a new Worcester State single season point total of 36, surpassing the previous mark of 35, held by Vanessa Vallee.

With the victory, Worcester State improves to 12-3-1 overall and 7-0-0 in the MASCAC to claim the 2014 MASCAC women's soccer regular season crown and will host an opponent yet to be determined in second round action of the 2014 MASCAC women's soccer tournament, while Fitchburg State concludes its season at 3-14-1 overall and 0-6-1 within the conference.

Worcester State took the lead at the 19:18 mark of the opening frame as freshman Justine Butler fed a through ball to Macomber, who converted on the breakaway attempt with her team-leading 14th tally on the season for the 1-0 margin.

The Falcons nearly knotted the score in the 30th minute of play when junior Jacqueline Walker and senior Sierra Santos each had quality shot on frame, but Lancers keeper Jillian Witkowski turned aside both shot to preserve the 1-0 lead going into the break.

Following intermission, Worcester State doubled their lead (2-0) four minutes into the frame as Macomber received a feed from classmate Mackenzie Foyle and fired a shot inside the upper right corner for her second tally of the contest.

The Blue and Gold upped their advantage at the 54:54 mark when sophomore midfielder Cassie Giarina buried a shot into the back of net for her fourth score of the season off an assist from Kendal Bergenholtz for the 3-0 lead.

The visitors capped the scoring roughly nine minutes later as Bergenholtz collected a pass from senior Shelby Archer and deposited the ball into the right side of the net, resulting in the 4-0 final.

Throughout the match, Worcester State out shot Fitchburg State 16-12, while the corner kicks were even at one apiece.  In goal, senior Kelsey Ford collected seven stops in the complete game effort for the Falcons, while Witkowski finished with eight saves en-route to the clean sheet for Worcester State.
