Fitchburg State Shoots Past Rhode Island College, 3-1

Santos net two goals in Falcons non-conference victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Senior forward Sierra Santos registered a pair of marker to lift the Fitchburg State women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over the visiting Anchorwomen of Rhode Island College in non-conference action at Elliot Field this evening.

In the opening frame, Fitchburg State opened the scoring in the 27th minute of action as Santos took a feed from classmate Mikaela Foley and fired a shot inside the far post for the 1-0 lead.

The Falcons doubled their lead at the 43:17 mark when Santos settled a loose ball in front of the net and lofted shot into the upper right corner of the net for her second tally for the contest to make the score 2-0 going into intermission.

Following intermission, the Green and Gold upped its advantage (3-0) just four minutes into the stanza as sophomore Samantha Zina deposited the ball into the back of the net off an assist from classmate Carolyn Ciccatelli.

Rhode Island College broke its scoring silence in the 87th minute of play when junior forward Gabrielle Turner blasted a shot inside the upper right corner for her team-leading tenth score on the year, resulting in the 3-1 final.

Throughout the game, Fitchburg State held a commanding 26-15 advantage in shots, while the Anchorwomen finished with an 8-5 margin in corner kicks. Between the pipes, senior Kelsey Ford stopped eight shots for the Falcons in the complete game effort, while counterpart Audrey Maia  made 12 first half saves for Rhode Island College.

Fitchburg State (3-10-1, 0-3-1 MASCAC) will be back in action on Saturday as it visits the Rams of Framingham State at 11 a.m. Rhode Island College (2-11-0, 0-4-0 LEC) will travel to Eastern Connecticut State on Saturday at 1 p.m.
