Fitchburg State Falls At Westfield State, 6-0

Ford collects ten saves for the Falcons

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior forward Amanda Grant notched a hat trick as Westfield State University defeated Fitchburg State, 6-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) women's soccer action at Alumni Field.

In the first half, Westfield State opened the scoring in the 22nd minute of play as Grant collected a rebounded shot off the foot of senior Sarah Sypek  and buried a shot into the net for 1-0 lead.

The Owls quickly doubled their margin two minutes later when Grant collected a feed from classmate Ashleigh Chretien and fired a shot from the left side for her second tally of the contest for the 2-0 advantage after 45 minutes of play.

Following the break, the hosts would up its lead (4-0) as Grant received a through ball from sophomore Kate Matroni  to complete the hat-trick just ten seconds into the frame before Matroni connected for her second score of the season roughly four minutes later en-route to the 6-0 final.

Throughout the match, Westfield State controlled the offensive end, out shooting Fitchburg State 30-4, while also holding a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks. Between the pipes, senior Kelsey Ford registered ten saves in the complete game effort for Fitchburg State, while the duo of freshman Leah Campa and sophomore Anne Stack went untested for the Owls.

Fitchburg State (1-5-0, 0-1-0 MASCAC) will be in action again on Tuesday as it travels to Curry College for a contest starting at 7 p.m. Westfield State (4-2-1, 1-0-0 MASCAC) will host Smith College on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
