Foster stops four shots for Falcons in non-conference setback 

NASHUA, N.H. – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 decision to the Raiders of River University in non-conference action this evening at Raider Field.

In the first half, Rivier threatened in the seventh minute of play as senior forward Maggie Cohoon fired a pair of shots towards goal, but Falcon keeper Alexandra Foster denied both chances to preserve the 0-0 stalemate.

The Falcons best scoring opportunity of the opening frame occurred at the 22:24 mark when senior midfielder Ali Sheehan put a shot on frame, only to have Raiders goaltender Lauren Goodspeed turn the shot aside to send the game into the break with the score knotted at 0-0.

Following intermission, Fitchburg State turned up the offensive pressure as junior Whitney Mansfield, senior Victoria Floeck and freshman Natalie Arsenault all registered shots on target in the first six minutes of the second stanza, but Goodspeed was able to make all three saves as the score remained 0-0.

The Raiders broke the 0-0 deadlock at the 77:08 mark when Cohoon feed a pass to classmate Jackie Russo, who proceeded to deposit the ball into the back of the net for the 1-0 advantage.

With time winding down, the Green and Gold nearly forced overtime with just under two minutes left in regulation as freshman midfielder Brittny Peralta blasted a shot on frame that Goodspeed was able to deflect away from goal, resulting in the 1-0 final.

Throughout the match, Fitchburg State finished with an 11-5 margin in shot, while the corner kicks were even at six aside. In net, Foster stopped four shots in 90 minutes of action for the Falcons, while Goodspeed made seven saves for Rivier in the complete game shutout.

Fitchburg State (2-3-0, 0-0-0 MASCAC) returns to action on Saturday as it hosts the Rams of Framingham State for a contest starting at 3 p.m. Rivier (1-2-1, 0-1-0 GNAC) will host Saint Joseph's of Maine on Saturday at 3 p.m.
