Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's soccer team dropped a season-opening 1-0 decision to the Blue Jays of University of Saint Joseph (CT) this afternoon in non-conference action from Elliot Field.

How It Happened

The Blue Jays scored the lone goal of the game on a set corner play. Senior Ali O'Neil (Litchfield, Conn.) found first year Gabriella Gulino (Wethersfield, Conn.) at the front post for the tip past Falcons goaltender Allison Gough (Wolcott, Conn.) for the 1-0 advantage. 

Fitchburg State saw quality chances in the first half with two corners and three shots on goal but were stymied by the visiting defense in the second half.

• USJ held the advantage in shots (16-7) and corner kicks (5-2)
• FSU junior Gough made two saves in the first half, while freshman Abaigeal Gilman (Clinton, Mass.) turned away five shots in the second half. 
• Gulino notched her first collegiate goal for the Blue Jays
• Goaltender Lindsey Montminy (Vernon, Conn.) posted the shutout with three saves
