How It Happened

Western New England grabbed the lead at the 7:02 mark of the first half when sophomore Isabella Montalvo (Rocky Hill, Conn.) settled a feed from senior Allison Bruehwiler (Old Saybrook, Conn.) and found the back of the net for her first collegiate tally to make the score 1-0.

Fitchburg State nearly knotted the score midway through the frame as freshman Abaigeal Gillman (Clinton, Mass.) put a shot on frame, but Golden Bears keeper Molly McLaughlin (Guilford, Conn.) turned the shot aside to preserve the 1-0 edge.

The visitors doubled their margin in the 44th minute of action with newcomer Lindsay Reidy (Chicopee, Mass.) connected on her first collegiate tally of a feed from classmate Emily Chojnicki (Newington, Conn.) for the 2-0 advantage going into the break.

Following intermission, Western New England upped its lead (3-0) at the 47:25 mark as Bruehwiler deposited a shot inside the near post for her second goal of the 2021 campaign with senior Autumn Hathaway (Colchester, Vt.) assisting on the play.

The Golden Bears secured the victory with 29 minutes left in regulation when junior Danielle McCarthy (Old Lyme, Conn.) struck for her first tally on the season, resulting in the 5-0 final.
