Falcons Defeated By Lancers, 3-1

McCarthy nets second goal of the season for Green and Gold

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State Women's Soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Lancers of Worcester State University this afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Worcester State grabbed the lead midway through the first half when senior Alana Garofalo (Berlin, Conn.) threaded a pass to junior Haley Mignon (Tewksbury, Mass.), who fired a shot inside the near post for her second goal on the season for the 1-0 edge.

Fitchburg State knotted the score (1-1) in the 36th minute as graduate student Shannon McCarthy (Chicopee, Mass.) settled a pass from sophomore Ashley Porter (Upton, Mass.) and deposited the ball into the upper right corner for her second tally of the 2021 campaign.

The Lancers regained the lead with just 30 seconds remaining in the half with Mignon sliding a pass over to junior Haley Samara (Worcester, Mass.) as Samara then lofted a shot into the upper middle for her first marker of the year to make the score 2-1 going into the break.

Worcester State upped its margin at the 54:09 mark when senior Cammi Arnold (Marlborough, Mass.) collected a loose ball and blasted a shot inside the near post for her first goal of the season for the 3-1 edge.

This afternoon's contest marked the 31st meeting between the two schools on the pitch with the Falcons 3-28-0 all-time when taking on the Lancers

Worcester State has won the last 15 matchups against Fitchburg State, including a 6-0 decision in the last meeting on November 5, 2019 at Coughlin Field

Lancers finished with an 18-6 advantage in shots, while also holding a slim 5-4 edge in corner kicks

Junior Allison Gough (Wolcott, Conn.) made three saved for the Falcons
