Falcons Fly At DIII New England Championships

McClure paces Fitchburg State at Southern Maine; Derochers shines at Bates

FITCHBURG, Mass. (February 16, 2013) – Members of the Fitchburg State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams were in action this weekend as they competed in the DIII New England Championships. The Falcons men’s team traveled to Bates College, while the women visited the University of Southern Maine.

For the men, senior Zach Desrochers (Dracut, Mass./Greater Lowell) stole the show, placing second overall in the weight throw with a toss of 19.03 meters. With that toss, the senior thrower narrowly missed breaking the school record of 19.18 meters set by former Falcon Ed Healy in 1979. The throw also moves Derochers up to fifth in the nation among Division three schools.

Junior Pat Conaty (Southington, Conn./Southington) also collected DIII accolades in the pole vault, placing eighth overall in the pole vault with a height of 4.30m.

The Fitchburg State women had two members and a relay compete at the DIII Championships with sophomore Rebecca McClure (Lyndeborogh, N.H./Wilton-Lyndeborough) leading the way. McClure earned the top finish for the Falcons (11th) in the pole vault, posting a height of 3.15 meters. With that vault, Rebecca broke her own school record of 3.05 meters set earlier in the year.

The Falcons 4x800 relay team of junior Alyson Moreau (Barrington, R.I./Barrington), classmate Samantha Wilkinson (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield) and sophomores Braila Roy (Hyannis, Mass./Barnstable) and Jenae Harrison (Sioux Falls, S.D./Washington) posted an ECAC qualifying time of 10:05.81, while placing 14th in the event.

Sophomore Arthina Robert (Lynn, Mass./Lynn Voc Tech) wrapped up the top performers for the Falcons, earning an 18th place finish in the 55 meter dash, with a solid time of 6.52 seconds.

Members of the Fitchburg State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams will be in action next weekend as they compete at the All-New England Championships beginning Friday afternoon.
