Fitchburg State Soars At Jay Carisella Meet

Mello places seventh in long jump to pace men; Steele and Harrison qualify for ECAC's to lead women

ROXBURY, Mass. – The Fitchburg State men's and women's indoor track & field teams were in action this afternoon as they competed in the 2014 Jay Carisella Meet hosted by Northeastern University.

For the ladies, sophomore Morgan Steele set a personal best with an ECAC qualifying toss of 14.78 meters in the weight throw, while senior Jenae Harison turned in time of 1:20.26 to qualify for ECAC's in the 500m. Newcomer Amanda Remie was also solid, notching a MASCAC qualifying time of 8.72 second in the 60 meter dash.

In the 800 meter, freshmen Nicole Gaffney and Shawna Ryan notched MASCAC qualifying times of 2:40.08 and 2:53.28, while classmates Jenna Phelps (1:28.83) and Annie Woolley (28.78) added post season qualifying times in the 500m and 200 meter respectively.

Senior Braila Roy improved upon her time in the 1000m (3:15.60) from last week as did Woolley (9.73) in the 60 meter hurdles, newcomer Michaella Vecchiarelli in the long jump (4.45m) and Ryan (5:53.18) and Gaffney (5:30.65) in the mile to round out the top Falcon efforts for the women's squad.  

On the men's side, junior Bob Mello led the way, placing seventh overall in the long jump with a personal best and DIII New England qualifying mark of 6.48 meters, while also turning in a post-season qualifying time of 54.30 seconds in the 400 meter.

On the track, freshman Jake Hastings (2:47.00), classmate Liam Eble (2:58.58), sophomores Matthew Cuomo (2:45.58) and Joseph Little (2:50.89) and junior Michael Martin (2:56.89) posted MASCAC times in the 1000m, while sophomore Nicholas Levenson registered a post-season qualifying time of 53.49 in the 400 meter.

Junior Kwaku Mensah was strong in the 60 meter dash, posting a DIII NE qualifying time of 7.25 seconds, while classmate Javier Lozada turned a time of 7.47 seconds to qualify for MASCAC's in the 60m as well.

Hastings (4:32.81), Cuomo (4:35.37) and Little (4:44.27) collected MASAC qualifying times in the mile, while in the 500 meter, sophomore Chauncey Beatty and juniors Daniel Fitzpatrick and Richard Ethier  notched post-season qualifying times of 1:08.38, 1:09.17 and 1:09.94 respectively.

In the 5000 meter, senior Eric Ouellette (8th) and newcomer Alex Napolitan turned in MASCAC qualifying times of 15:30.19 and 17:42.00 respectively, while junior Tim Allen and senior Jim Quinlan posted MASCAC qualifying times of 9:35.83 and 2:41.08 in the 3000m and 800 meter. Freshman Ben Sattiewhite rounded out the top Falcon efforts on the afternoon with a MASCAC qualifying mark of 1.93 meters in the high jump.

The Fitchburg State men's and women's indoor track & field teams will be in action again after the winter break as they visit Tufts University on Saturday, January 17th for a meet starting at 10 a.m.
