Fitchburg State Track Opens At UMass Boston

Harrison qualifies for ECAC’s in 800m with sixth place time of 2:21.56; Saint-Juste finishes sixth in 60m hurdles with ECAC qualifying time of 8.58

BOSTON, Mass. – The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams opened their 2014-15 campaigns this afternoon as they competed at the 3rd annual UMass Boston Indoor Track and Field Open at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston.

Senior Jenae Harrison led the way for the women’s squad, placing fourth overall in 800 meter with a MASCAC, DIII NE and ECAC qualifying time of 2:21.56, while also posting a MASCAC qualifying time of 28:39 in the 200m. Classmate Rebecca McClure was also strong, turning in the a DIII New England qualifying mark of 3.05 in the pole vault with a seventh place effort as well as registering a post-season qualifying time of 28.44 in the 200m.

On the track, the ladies were just as strong paced by freshman Annie Woolley’s DIII NE and MASCAC time of 9.89 in the 60 meter hurdles, while the women’s 4x400m relay team of newcomers Sadie Zbikowski, Holly Sessler, Jenna Phelps and senior Karollynn Wickless-Adams turned in a time of 4:33.78 to also qualify for the DIII NE’s and MASCAC’s.

In the 5K, junior Libby Ward and classmate Jessica Mangan garnered MASCAC qualifying times of 20:21.22 and 22:09.22 respectively, while Wickless-Adams (2:54.88) and freshmen Dorothee Petzel (2:54.88) and Alyssa Cardoso (2:59.58) all notched post-season qualifying times in the 800 meter.

Senior Arthina Robert put registered a pair of MASCAC qualifying time in the 60m hurdles (8.16) and 200 meter (28.15), while Phelps (1:02.87), Zbikwoski (1:10.02) and Sessler (1:06.95) each collected post-season qualifying times in the 400m.

In the mile run, freshman Nicole Gaffney and classmate Shawna Ryan posted MASCAC qualifying time of 5:39.14 and 6:25.92 respectively, while Ward (12:15.86) and Mangan (13:02.04) added post-season qualifying time in the 3000m.

Senior Sarah Elliot put forth a strong effort with a pair of MASCAC qualifying throw in the shot put (9.92m) and weight throw (11.39m), while classmate Braila Roy posted a MASCAC qualifying time of 3:21.92 in the 1000 meter.

Sophomore thrower Morgan Steele qualified for MASCAC’s in both the weight throw (13.18m) and shot put (9.78m), while Zbikowski turned in a post-season qualifying mark of 2.60 meter in the pole vault.

Junior Angelica Picucci and newcomer Michaela Vecchiarelli rounded out the top Falcon effort for the women registering MASCAC qualifying jumps of 3.85m and 4.09m respectively in the long jump.

The Falcons men’s team had a successful start to the 2014 season as Phillip Saint-Juste qualified for three post-season honors in the 60 meter hurdles as Saint-Juste notched MASCAC, DIII NE and ECAC marks to place sixth overall with a time of 8.58, while adding a MASCAC qualifying mark of 6.28m in the long jump.

Freshman Ben Sattiewhite was the only other Falcon to notch DIII marks with a mark of 2.00 meters in the long jump to place second overall, while Fitchburg State collected MASCAC qualifiers in nine other events.

On the track, junior Tim Allen and freshmen Sean Beverly posted MASCAC qualifying time of 16:52.9 and 17:35.81 in the 5K, while junior Jim Quinlan (2:45.03), classmate Michael Martin (2:59.40) and newcomer Liam Eble (2:53.67) notched post-season times in the 1000 meter.

Sophomore Chauncey Beatty and junior Daniel Fitzpatrick qualified for the MASCAC’s in the 400 meter with times of 53.00 and 53.01 respectively, while juniors Akhiel Willis (7.32) and Bob Mello (7.51) both qualified for MASCAC’s in the 60 meter.

Senior Ethan Gorecki and sophomore Nicholas Levenson notched MASCAC qualifying times of 1:10.20 and 1:10.25 in the 500m, while the 4x400m relay team of Levenson, Gorecki, Fitzpatrick and Beatty posted a post-season qualifying time of 3:34.38.

In the 800 meter, junior Richard Ethier (4th) and Beatty garnered MASCAC qualifying times of 2;02.16 and 2:03.58, while freshman Jake Hastings (9:16.77)) and sophomore Matt Cuomo  (9:43.00) both qualified for MASCAC’s in the 3000 meter.

In the field, senior David Oster notched a MASCAC qualifying toss of 12.01 meters in the shot put to set a new personal best, while newcomer Joe Bernardini registered a post-season qualifying throw of 11.61 in the shot put.

Mello collected his second post-season qualifier in the long jump with mark of 5.82 meters, while senior Mark Wesgan rounded out the top Falcon efforts on the men’s side, with a MASCAC qualifying mark of 5.56m in the long jump.

The Fitchburg State men’s and women’s track and field teams will be back in action next weekend as they compete at the 2014 Jay Casella Invitational hosted by Northeastern University at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center on Saturday at 10 a.m.
