Fitchburg State Soars At Greater Boston Track Club Invite

Steele places second overall in the shot put and weight throw with pair of DIII NE marks

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's indoor track and field team competed in the 2016 Greater Boston Track Club Invite this afternoon, hosted by Harvard University.

Junior Morgan Steele led the way for the Falcons, placing second overall in the shot put with a DIII New England qualifying mark of 11.06 meters as well as adding a DIII NE qualifying toss of 14.29 meters in the weight throw with a second place finish.

In the 800 meter, sophomore Shawna Ryan (5th) and junior Kelly McCarthy (7th) posted post-season qualifying times of 2:34.76 and 2:49.06, while sophomore Jenna Phelps (1:52.01) and classmate Bridget Diggins (1:58.03) qualified for MASCAC's in the 600m.

Sophomores Nicole Gaffney and Cassie Lavallee turned in post-season qualifying times of 5:31.89 and 6:37.55 in the mile, while in the 1000 meter fellow sophomore Casey Taylor placed 15th overall with post-season qualifying time of 3:32.51.

The 4x200 meter relay team of Phelps and sophomores Holly Sessler, Huong Hoang and Amanda Remie posted a MASCAC qualifying time of 1:58.02 to finish fourth overall, while the 4x400m relay team of Ryan, Gaffney, McCarthy and junior Sadie Zbikowski put forth a solid fifth place effort with at time of 4:34.26 to also qualify for MASCAC's.

In the field, freshman Molly Atkinson (4.26), sophomore Melody Francis (4.33) and Remie (4.18) all notched MASCAC qualifying marks in the long jump, while  in the pole vault Zbikowski (4th) and sophomore Michaella Vecchiarelli (9th) notched post-season qualifying heights of 2.90m and 2.45m.

Sessler registered a MASCAC qualifying jump of 1.45 meters in the triple jump with a third place finish, while Hoang (8.54) and sophomore Annie Woolley (28.43) rounded out the top Falcon efforts on the afternoon with post-season qualifying times in the 60m and 200 meter respectively.

The Fitchburg State women's indoor track and field team will be back in action on Saturday at they compete in the 2015-16 Tufts Stampede, hosted by Tufts University at 11 a.m.
