Falcons Excel At Branwen Smith-King Invite

Camara finishes third overall in the high jump with a mark of 1.51 meters

Medford, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's outdoor track & field team finished tenth with a total of 19.5 points as the Falcons competed at the 2023 Branwen Smith-King Invitational this afternoon, hosted by Tufts University.

How It Happened

Junior Makany Camara (Lowell, Mass.) paced the Green and Gold today after finishing third overall in the high jump with a MASCAC qualifying jump of 1.51 meters, while the 4x800 meter relay team of freshman Skye Goba (Norton, Mass.), seniors Lilah McAndrew (Old Lyme, Conn.), Abigail Murphy (Quincy, Mass.) and Maria Burnett (Fitchburg, Mass.) posted a strong third place time of 10:38.90.

In the 1000 meter, Goba (3:18.32) and Murphy (3:18.69) finished eighth and ninth respectively to qualify for MASCAC's, while in the 800 meter, Burnett (6th), McAndrew (10th) and senior Sophie Geremia (Shrewsbury, Mass.) (14th) notched post-season qualifying times of 2:36.76, 2:45.53 and 3:02.04

Junior Joyce Arbia (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) (22nd), newcomer Emily Russo (Gardner, Mass.) (2:10.89) and Grace Casale (25th) notched times of 2:03.56, 2:10.89 and 2:18.74 in the 600 meter with Arbia qualifying for the MASCAC's, while freshman Alanis Velez (Lowell, Mass.) finished 20th in the 200 meter with a time of 32.48 seconds.

The 4x400 meter relay team of Russo, Arbia, Casale and junior Courtney Brouillet (Fitchburg placed sixth with a solid time of 5:22.36, while Velez (11th) and junior Erin Donelan (Fitchburg, Mass.) (12th) added times of 11.54 seconds each in the 60 meter hurdles.

In the field, junior Olivia Kephart (Rutland, Mass.) turned a pair of MASCAC qualifying tosses in the weight throw (8.83M) (23rd) and the shotput (7.89M (24th), while freshman Cassandra Israelson qualifying for the post-season with a toss of 7.89 meter in shotput (24th) in addition to finishing 31st in the shotput with a throw of 6.58 meters.

Velez wrapped up the top Falcons efforts on day, placing 21st overall in the long jump with a mark of 4.02 meters.
