Fitchburg State Opens At Bears Invite

Steele earns top honors in the hammer throw, while adding a fourth place effort in the shot put

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's outdoor track & field team opened the 2016 season this afternoon as they competed at the 2016 Bears Track & Field Invitational, hosted by Bridgewater State University.

For the ladies, junior Morgan Steele paced the Falcons, earning top honors in the hammer throw with a DIII NE qualifying toss of 43.31m, while adding a fourth place throw of 10.37 meters in the shot put to qualify for MASCAC's.

Sophomore Annie Woolley was also strong, registering a second place finish in the 100 meter hurdles with a DIII NE qualifying time of 15.87 second as well as turning in a post-season qualifying time of 13.37 seconds in the 100 meter dash with a tenth place effort.

The 4x400 meter relay team of senior Alexis Podedworny, junior Elizabeth Norman and sophomores Shawna Ryan and Holly Wentworth posted a DIII NE qualifying time of 5:00.84 to finish seventh overall, while sophomore Casey Taylor notched a post-season qualifying time of 21:02.60 in the 5000 meter.

On the track, Sessler (400m) and Ryan (800m) registered MASCAC qualifying times of 67,80 seconds and 2:34.52, while senior Jessica Mangan notched a post-season qualifying time of 43:53.51 in the 10,000 meter.

In the field, junior Sadie Zbikowski put forth a strong showing in the pole vault with MASCAC qualifying vault of 2.90m to place second overall, while Sessler added a post-season qualifying mark of 1,48m with a fifth place finish in the high jump.

In the javelin, junior Emilee Felton (7th), freshman Hannah Barbarotta (8th) and classmate Jaquelyn Manyak collected MASCAC qualifying tosses of 31.60, 31.51 and 28.23 meters respectively, while newcomer Soraya Auguste (25..59m) and junior Melody Francis (4.29m) rounded out the top Falcons efforts with MASCAC qualifying marks in the discus and long jump respectively.

The Fitchburg State women's outdoor track & field team return to action next Saturday as it hosts the 2016 Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational Meet, beginning at 10 a.m.
