Falcons Exceed At DIII NE Championships

Steele sets new school record in the hammer with ECAC qualifying toss of 46.77m

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. –  The Fitchburg State women's outdoor track and field team completed in the 2016 DIII New England Championships this afternoon, hosted by Springfield College at the Blake Track & Field Complex.

Junior Morgan Steele continued her strong 2016 campaign, placing fifth overall in the hammer throw with an ECAC qualifying toss of 46.77m to earn DIII NE honors, while setting a new school record in the process as well as adding a solid throw of 10.21 meters in the shot put.

Sophomore Annie Woolley collected DIII New England honors in the 100 meter hurdles with a new PR and Open NE qualifying time of 14.56 seconds with a second place effort. With that time, Woolley currently ranks 20th in the nation in the 100m hurdles.

The 4x400 meter relay team of junior Sadie Zbikowski, classmate Elizabeth Norman and sophomores Shawna Ryan and Holly Sessler put forth a solid time of 4:30.81, while Sessler also posted a time of 1:09.63 in the 400 meter hurdles..

In the pole vault, Zbikowski placed 13th overall with vault of 3.05 meters, while freshman Molly Atkinson registered a toss of 32.78m in the javelin to round out the top Falcon efforts on the afternoon.

The Fitchburg State women's outdoor track & field teams will be in action again next weekend, as select members compete in the 2016 Open New England Championships, hosted by Southern Connecticut State University, starting on Friday at 4 p.m.
