Bailey sets program record in the discus with a toss of 38.61 meters

New London, Conn. – The Fitchburg State University women's outdoor track & field team placed 13th at the 2023 Silfen Invitational with a total of 23 points this afternoon at Connecticut College.

How It Happened

Sophomore Ephemian Bailey (Maple Grove, Minn.) led the way for the Green and Gold, placing fourth in discus with a DIII New England and personal best throw of 38.61 meters to set a new school record in the process, surpassing the previous mark of 36.88 meters held by Karen Duggan (1984), while finishing fourth in the shot put with a PR and DIII NE qualifying throw of 11.51 meters. Concluded the afternoon, registering a 33rd place effort in the hammer throw with a PR toss of 24.18 meters.

Junior Makany Camara (Lowell, Mass.) was also solid for the Falcons, placing fourth in the 100 meter hurdles with a DIII NE and PR time of 15.79 seconds, while finishing third overall in the high jump with a personal best and DIII New qualifying mark of 1.57 meters.

Freshman Shamya Boulware McKnight (Hartford, Conn.) notched a pair of personal best times in the 100 meter (14.36) and the 200 meter (30.57), while newcomer Trinity Hansen (Worcester, Mass.) notched a PR time of 32.45 in the 200 meter.

Junior Erin Donelan (Fitchburg, Mass.) placed 17th in the 100 meter hurdles with a MASCAC and personal best time of 19.01 seconds, while in the 400 meter, Hansen (31st) (PR) and junior Joyce Arbia (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) (35th) posted times of 1:12.03 and 1:14.85.

In the 800 meter, senior Lilah McAndrew (Old Lyme, Conn.) and newcomer Skye Goba (Norton, Mass.) set PR and MASCAC qualifying times of 2:40.22 and 2:32.09, while McAndrew added a new personal best and post-season qualifying time of 13:12.20 in the 3000 meter steeple chase (12th).

In the 800 meter, Murphy (2nd), McAndrew (13th) and junior Joyce Arbia (Sag Harbor, N.Y.) (15th) posted times of 2:30.08, 2:44.34 and 2:48.64, while in the 100 meter junior Elizabeth Read (Chelmsford, Mass.) (14.87) and newcomer Shamya Boulware McKnight (Hartford, Conn.) (15.11) placed 23rd and 24th.

The 4x100 meter relay team of Camara, McKnight, senior Jenna Aubuchon (Fitchburg, Mass.) and junior Elizabeth Read (Fitchburg, Mass.) posted a season best time of 56.17 seconds with a 12th place finish, while Aubuchon added a PR mark of 4.00 meters in the long jump.

In the field, Read notched a n PR and MASCAC qualifying throw of 30.60 meters in the javelin with a seventh place finish, while newcomer Cassandra Israelson (Saugus, Mass.) placed 35th in the discus with a PR toss of 22.59 meters.

In the shot put, Israelson (30th) and junior Antonia Sacramone (Hubbardston, Mass.) (33rd) registered throws of 7.83M and 7.62M, while junior Olivia Kephart (Rutland, Mass.) posted a MASCAC qualifying toss of 28.58 meters in the hammer throw after placing 28th overall.

Senior Courtney Brouillet (Fitchburg, Mass.) collected a PR time of 1:25.03 in the 400 meter hurdles with an 18th place finish, while senior Sophie Geremia (Shrewsbury, Mass.) rounded out the top Falcon efforts on the day, posting a time of 22:57.17 in the 5000 meter.
