Falcons Upended By Lasers, 3-0

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State Women's Volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to the Lasers of Lasell University this evening in non-conference action from the Parkinson Gymnasium.

The Basics

Score: Fitchburg State 0, Lasell 3 (20-25, 18-25, 16-25)

Set One
Fitchburg State grabbed a 7-5 edge on kills from graduate student Lauren Riccardi (Tewksbury, Mass.) and sophomore Alissa Olmsted (Ashby, Mass.) before Lasell knotted the score at 10-10 following  service ace by senior Jess Langan (Burnt Hills, N.Y.). The Falcons regained  the lead (13-10) as Riccardi notched another kill, but the Lasers went on a 4-1 run at the end of the first set to make the score 22-17 in favor of the visitors, capped by kills from Camila Lopez (Barquisimeto, Venezuela) and Madalyn Scully (Mauston, Wis.), resulting in the 25-20 first set final.

Set Two
Lasell opened the second set with a 6-32 margin on a kill by newcomer Sabine Milton (San Mateo, Calif.). The Green and Gold rallied to cut the deficit to 9-8 with freshman Sariah Dyer (Raynham, Mass.) adding a kill before the Lasers closed out the middle set on an Isabelle Babock (York, Maine) kill for the 25-18 triumph.

Set Three

The visitors raced out to an early 4-1 lead in the third set on a Milton kill, but Fitchburg State answered back (7-5) following a Riccardi kill. The Lasers extended their advantage to 17-9 on another kill from Milton before the Falcons responded with a service ace from sophomore Emily Gelinas (Westfield, Mass.) and an Amy Coelho (Bellingham, Mass.) kill. Lasell secured the match though as Milton netted a kill, resulting in the 25-16 final.

Inside the Numbers

This evening's contest marked just the second meeting between Fitchburg State and Lasell on the volleyball court with the Falcons 0-2 all-time when taking on the Lasers

Lasell won the first ever matchup with the Falcons, securing a 3-0 decision on September 7, 2019 at the Lasell Athletic Center

Freshman Samantha Mirra (Burlington, Mass.) paced the Falcons with a team-best ten digs, four kills, one assist and two solo blocks, while Riccardi added four kills, three digs and three solo blocks. Junior Meredith Taylor (Reading, Mass.) was also solid for Fitchburg State, finishing with ten digs and six assists.

For the Lasers, Milton registered a game-leading eight kills, nine digs, one assist, two service aces, three solo blocks and one blocking assist, while Langan chipped in with a match-best 15 assists, one kill, four service aces, six digs and one solo block.

Falcons return to action on Thursday as they travel to Colby-Sawyer to take on the Chargers for a non-conference match, starting at 7:00 PM. Lasers will host the Bears of Bridgewater State on the same date for a non-conference tilt at 7:00 PM.
