Volleyball Splits Non-Conference Tri-Match

Gelinas set program record for assists in a career at 501 

PROVIDENCE, RI: Fitchburg State dropped a 3-1 decision to the Bison of Nichols College before earning a 3-2, five set victory over Rhode Island College in a non-conference tri-match, hosted by Rhode Island College this afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Match One

-  Fitchburg State was led by sophomore Stephanie Sardella (Billerica, MA) with a team best ten kills as well as one service ace, eight digs and one block assist, while junior Samantha Mirra (Burlington, MA) added seven kills, one assist and ten digs. Senior Emily Gelinas (Westfield, MA) led the team with 23 assists as well as two kills, five digs and three service aces, while defensively, newcomer Jessica Greco (Southington, CT) finished with 11 dige.

- For the Bison, Haylee Granato finished with a team best nine kills, two service aces, six digs and one solo block, while Luna Colozzo chipped in with eight kills, four service aces, two blocking assists and eight digs. Ryley Ploude concluded the match with a match best 30 assists, while defensively for Nichols, Liz Diorio registered 19 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Match Two

-  In the third match of the day, the Falcons went up 2 sets to 1 before taking the final set to earn a thrilling five set triumph. Sardella posted a match-leading 18 kills, one assist, three service aces and 14 digs, while Mirra added 15 kills, one assist, five service aces and 21 digs. Gelinas netted an impressive total of 41 assists, while Greco led the Green and Gold defensively with 28 digs.

- For the Anchorwomen, Sarina Marines notched a team best ten kills, four service aces and seven digs, while Sydnee Pires chipped with seven kills and one blocking assist. Yuleisy Alvelo posted 29 assists for the hosts, while Carolyn Bailey collected 27 digs to pace the Anchorwomen's defense
