Women's Volleyball Drops Two at Southern Maine

GORHAM, ME: Fitchburg State women's volleyball dropped both matches to Eastern Conn. St. and Southern Maine in non-conference action this afternoon. 

THE BASICS:

- Date: 9/23/23

- Score: EConn 3, Fitchburg 0 (23-25, 17-25, 20-25).

              Southern Maine 3, Fitchburg 1 (19-25, 24-26, 25-22, 13-25)

- Records: Southern Maine (4-8), EConn (7-4), Fitchburg (4-6)

HOW IT HAPPENED: Match One

-  The Warriors were led by Haley Jo Bridges, with seven kills. Bridges was able to finish with the team-high in kills due to sets by teammate Liz Squier, who finished with 13 assists. Cassie Parmelee held down the defense with a team-high eight digs.

- The Falcons were led once again by Stephanie Sardella (Billerica, MA), who had a match-high ten kills. Emily Gelinas (Westfield, MA) set up Fitchburg hitters with 21 assists. Jessica Greco (Southington, CT) also finished with a match-high in digs with 14.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Kills: EConn 31, Fitchburg 30

-  Assists: EConn 29, Fitchburg 26

-  Digs: Fitchburg 43, EConn 37

HOW IT HAPPENED: Match Two

-  The Huskies came out swinging in the first two sets to quickly go up 2-0 on the Falcons. In the first two sets, Southern Maine outhit Fitchburg 29-to-13. Brianna Delloiacono was the biggest contributor to the high number of kills, as she finished with a match-high 14. Madison Zimmer also contributed ten kills of her own. Cassidy Weiher dished out an impressive 37 assists, along with ten digs. Sierra Castonguay topped the team in digs with 17.  

- The Falcons struggled to get into a rhythm, finishing the match with a -.008 kill percentage. They had 128 attempts with 31 kills and 32 errors. Sardella and Samantha Mirra (Burlington, MA) tied for top kills with nine each. Mirra also racked up 19 digs, putting her second on the team behind Greco with 23. Gelinas remained in the setter spot in match two, assisting on 25 opportunities.

-  Assists: Southern Maine 47, Fitchburg 28

-  Digs: Fitchburg 63, Southern Maine 59
