Falcons Compete in MASCAC Cross Country Championship

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State women's cross country hosted the 2016 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Championships at Doyle Conservation Center on Saturday morning.

The women took fourth in the MASCAC with 119 total points, while Westfield State captured their 13th consecutive championship.

The women ran well on the afternoon as top-runner sophomore Ashley Hyde led the way for the ladies, placing twenty-sixth overall with a time of 21:14, while junior Nicole Gaffney finished right behind Hyde with a time of 21:23 over the 5k layout.

Senior Kelly McCarthy registered a time of 21:51 to finish 35th overall, while junior Casey Taylor crossed the finish line in 40th place with time of 22:06. Senior Shawna Ryan posted a time of 22:29 to round out the top efforts for the ladies.

Westfield State's Jessie Cardin earned her third straight MASCAC Women's Cross Country Runner of the Year accolade as the top overall individual finisher with a course record 5k time of 17:55, while Westfield State's Bill Devine was named the 2016 Champion's Choice Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year as voted on by his peers.

Members of the Fitchburg State women's cross country team will be in action again in two weekends as they compete at the NCAA Regionals hosted by Westfield State, starting at 10:30 A.M.
