Fitchburg State Rebounds Over Western Connecticut, 6-0

Jerome and Kelley pace Falcons LEC victory with two goals apiece

FITCHBURG, Mass. (October 14, 2011) – The Fitchburg State field hockey team rebounded within the Little East Conference this evening, downing Western Connecticut State University, 6-0 at Elliot Field.

With the victory, Fitchburg State evens its conference record with a 4-4 mark, while improving to 7-6 on the season. Western Connecticut State drops to 8-6 overall and 3-5 in the Little East.

Fitchburg State wasted no time getting on the board, posting a 2-0 lead within the first ten minutes of the contest. Senior Kaylee Bergeron (Acushnet, Mass./New Bedford) put the Falcons on the board first in the sixth minute of the match with her sixth goal of the season, while classmate Heather Jerome (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) gave the Falcons a two-goal lift with her second tally of the year at the 8:59 mark

The Falcons grabbed a 3-0 advantage later in the frame as Fitchburg State's leading goal scorer, Megan Jacobs (Stoughton, Mass./Stoughton) put one home for her 17th marker of the season. Junior Jamie Kelley (Pepperell, Mass./North Middlesex) capped the Falcons first half scoring in the 34th minute, tallying her seventh score of the season off a dish from Jacobs.

The Falcons added two more score in the second to complete the 6-0 victory. Jerome opened the second half scoring with her second goal of the contest at 54:51 before Kelley capped the Fitchburg State offensive outburst with a tally in the 60th minute.

Fitchburg State dominated the offensive front all night as Western Connecticut was hampered by four yellow cards in the game. The Falcons posted a commanding 33=12 advantage in shots, including a 20-5 margin in the first half. The Falcons peppered the Colonials goalkeepers with 28 on target shots as freshman Alyssa Picariello (Montrose, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) and sophomore Courtney Hearn (Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) combined for 22 saves. Senior Taylor Being (Haverhill, Mass./Haverhill) stopped six shots in the shutout for Fitchburg State.

Fitchburg State (7-6, 4-4 LEC) will be back in action on Wednesday as it travels to UMass Dartmouth at 7 p.m. Western Connecticut State (8-6, 3-5 LEC) will travel to Eastern Connecticut State University on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
